Aims/Background

Endoscopic findings of patients reporting with upper gastrointestinal symptoms

Method

The data in the form of reports of patients was obtained with the permission of endoscopist and was converted into computerized form. All the cases in a row that underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopic procedure from January 2013 to March 2016 were included in the study. Furthermore, all of the cases were thoroughly reviewed regarding their age, gender, indication for undergoing endoscopy, investigations, and ?ndings of the endoscopy

Results

Male to Female ratio was 1.13:1. A total of 2412 patients were included in this study. The mean age was 40.07 years. Out of 2412 patient, only 34 endoscopies were normal. The common pathological findings were Antral Gastritis (7.1%), Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (10.7%), Hiatus Hernia (6.5%), Large esophageal varices were found in (15.00%), Pangastritis (25.00%), Gastric malignancies (2.1%), Esophageal malignancies (1.6%). The most common symptoms that make patients undergo this procedure were Screening for Varices, Abdominal pain, Haematemesis, and Melena Other less common findings (Laryngeal mass, Mallory Weiss Tear, esophageal candidacies, U/C, Duodenal ulcer, Duodenitis duodenopathy etc) were accounted for 3.00% only.

Conclusions

Upper GI endoscopy is a gold standard tool for patients of upper Gastrointestinal symptoms to differentiate benign from malignant causes.
